  • Misleading: This video does not show hijacked Galaxy Leader in the Red Sea A post on X with a video featuring troops boarding a ship in the ocean claimed that the footage shows “Yemenis capturing Israeli cargo ship,” referring to the recent incident in which Yemen’s Houthi rebels seized an allegedly Israeli-linked cargo ship in the Red Sea. The post has 21,000 views and 142 reposts on X at the time of writing. The same video was also shared on X in Chinese and also on TikTok with similar claims about attacking Israeli ships. According to Al Jazeera, the Houthis said their action was in response to the “heinous acts against our Palestinian brothers in Gaza and the West Bank.” In the video, three speed boats with fully armed troops can be seen approaching and boarding a large ship in the ocean, which appears to be an attempt of hijacking. Annie Lab investigated the video and found the claim to be misleading. It has nothing to do with the attack because the footage is at least one year old. We compared a video released by the Houthis during the capture of the Galaxy Leader with the one on X. The cargo ships in the two clips do not look alike. We also found that a video identical to the one on X was posted on YouTube one year ago, on June 27, 2022, showing the same troops approaching and boarding a large ship. We reached out to the uploader to learn more about the video, but soon after that, it was removed from the channel. We did not hear back from the account owner and couldn’t find the exact origin of the footage. But some comments in the now-deleted YouTube video suggested that it may be related to the military exercise carried out by the Formoza Military Unit in Poland. We could identify the Polish flag on the speed boats in the video as well. We then looked for more information about the Polish Navy and found a video that shows the Formoza Military Unit soldiers. There are many visual similarities between the military exercise footage we found and the misleading clip in question. Although we could not identify the origin of the video, we found many news images of Polish special forces engaging in “visit, board, search, and seizure” military exercises over the years that also share visual similarities with the clip on X. Annie Lab can confirm that this video is unrelated to the ongoing war between Hamas and Israel or the recent hijacking of Galaxy Leader, as it is at least a year old, if not older. According to CNBC, the cargo ship is owned by a British company and operated by a Japanese business. Al Jazeera reported that Tokyo was in talks with Israel and also approached the Houthis as well as neighbouring nations such as Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Iran for the early release of the vessel and crew members.
