  • Fact Check: Video from Bangkok FALSELY shared as metro track collapsing in India At least two people died and several were injured after an under-construction elevated road collapsed in Bangkok on July 10. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from Bangkok, Thailand and it shows the collapse of an under-construction elevated road on July 10. A video going viral on social media purports to show "India's newly constructed overhead metro" collapsing. In the short clip, what looks like either an elevated metro line or a flyover could be seen falling to pieces. The archived version of such a post can be seen here. India Today, in its investigation, found that the video was from Bangkok, Thailand, and not India. Our probe We found no recent news reports about a metro track collapsing in India. When we looked at the video carefully, a filling station with "Ptt Station" written on it is visible. We also noticed a board with "Ochaya" written on it outside the petrol bunk. Further research revealed that Ochaya is a Thailand-based tea brand. This indicated that the video was from Thailand, not India. A comparison between the board seen in the viral video and a photo of the company’s logo on its website can be seen here. Taking cues from this information, we found a more extended version of the same video shared by several Facebook users in the second week of July. According to these posts, the video was from Bangkok. Per the Bangkok Post, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration stated in its preliminary investigation that the collapse of the elevated road in Bangkok was caused by the malfunction of heavy machinery that was lifting a concrete segment. According to a report published by Thailand-based news outlet, The Nation, the incident took place at a construction site of the Lat Krabang elevated bridge along the Luang Phaeng Road. Using this information, we searched for "Ptt station" on Luang Phaeng Road and found the exact location of the viral video on Google Maps. A comparison between the petrol bunk and the Honda showroom visible in the viral video with the Google Street View of the same location can be seen below. It is hence clear that the video in question shows the collapse of an under-construction elevated road in Bangkok.
