  • Last Updated on April 7, 2022 by Team THIP Quick Take A video shared multiple times on social media claims that people aged 25 to 44 in the United States experienced an 84% increase in excess mortality due to the COVID-19 vaccine rollout. We fact-checked and found the claim to be False. The Claim A two minute video shared by a Twitter user criticises the data on “Excess Deaths Associated with COVID-19” shared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website. The video has gathered 10.7K Retweets, 2,117 Quote Tweets and 18.3K Likes till now. The video is gathering attention on Facebook as well. The video is embedded down-below: Fact Check Is the interpretation of CDC’s data on Excess death is correctly done? It does not seem so. The CDC website has clearly mentioned that “The estimates presented may be an early indication of excess mortality related to COVID-19, but should be interpreted with caution, until confirmed by other data sources such as state or local health departments”. The excess deaths are not specific to events or causes but represent an overall increase in the number of deaths in an age group in comparison to previous years. There can be any reason contributing to the increase which includes missed COVID-19 deaths, missed emergency care, increases in deaths due to comorbidities and other conditions, etc. Also, the CDC’s WONDER database does not show any increase in the excess deaths since 2019 to reach 84% for the 25-44 age group. The CDC’s NCHS data shows that the percent increase in the excess deaths is way less than 84%, as claimed by the social media users. Moreover, the data shows that the increase in deaths is not specific to Covid-19 vaccination only. In response to the video, a Twitter user has pointed towards the Delta variant for an increase in deaths in 2021. As per the CDC website, the Delta variant followed by the Omicron variant increased Covid-19 deaths. In addition to Covid-19, the CDC website also recorded deaths due to drug overdose, cardiovascular disease, homicide, diabetes, motor vehicle accidents, and chronic liver disease in the 25 to 44 age group.
