Another video of this incident from Kerala revealed that the bird flew and sat on a tree behind the flag and had no role to play in the hoisting of the flag.
A video that looks like it came straight out of a patriotic movie, features a bird unfurling the national flag. The viral video shows a group of people trying to hoist the national flag, which gets stuck at the top of the flagpole. Suddenly, a bird flies towards it and as it flies away, the flag unfurls.
Those sharing the video claimed that a bird helped unfurl the flag during Independence Day celebrations in Kerala.
A person shared this video on Instagram writing, “During a flag-hoisting ceremony in Kerala, the national flag got stuck at the top. To everyone’s surprise, a bird appeared out of nowhere and managed to unfurl the flag. The incident, captured on video, amazed viewers and quickly went viral. The unique moment highlighted both the unexpected intervention and the patriotic spirit of the occasion. Many users on the internet say it's an unimaginable clip".
India Today Fact Check found another video of the incident shot from a different angle, which revealed that the bird flew and sat on a tree behind the flag and had no role to play in the hoisting.
OUR PROBE
As the incident was allegedly from Kerala, we conducted keyword searches in Malayalam and found a Facebook post dated August 17 containing the viral video. The caption stated that this incident took place at an Anganwadi centre in Malappuram’s Mampad.
We then contacted Shihab, a member of ward 7 of the Mampad Panchayat, who hoisted the national flag on August 15. He sent us another video of the same incident, shot from another angle, that makes the whole story clear as day.
Shihab told India Today that this incident took place at an Anganwadi centre in the Maramangalam village of Kattumunda. Kattumunda is a ward in the Mampad Panchayat of Kerala’s Malappuram district.
He said, “The viral video was recorded from where it looked like the bird came near the flag. But, if you watch the video carefully, you will realise that it was away from the flag and sat on a coconut tree. The video was also shared by Asianet News in a video report about the incident.
It is thus, clear that the video of a bird helping people unfurl a national flag was nothing but an optical illusion created due to camera angle.
