  • Fact Check: This ISN'T Russian military engaging with Wagner forces, it's video game footage India Today, in its Investigation, found that the footage was from a video game called 'Arma 3' and not actual battle footage. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This is a video game footage from ‘Arma 3’, and not actual war footage. In a sudden escalation of tensions between Russia's private military group Wagner and the country's military, Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, on June 23, reportedly sent an armoured convoy towards Moscow, raising questions about Vladimir Putin's grip on power. However, the revolt fizzled out when Prigozhin reached an agreement to go into exile and ordered his men to return to base. Several videos allegedly showing this clash have since gone viral on social media. One such video shared on Facebook claims to show a fight between the Russian air force and Wagner soldiers. “WAR IN RUSSIA. Russian Air Force Engaging Wagner PMC Ground Troops on the M4,” a person wrote on Facebook alongside the video. India Today’s investigation found that the footage is actually a video game simulation. Our Probe We reverse-searched the viral video’s keyframes and found the same footage uploaded to a YouTube channel named “Battle POPs” on March 31, 2023. The title of the video read, “Russia's Elite Air Force vs Ukrainian SAM Missiles Combat | MilSim Arma 3” According to the description of the video, this footage was from “Arma 3”, a military tactical shooting video game developed and published by Czech based game developer Bohemia Interactive. The “Battle POPs” YouTube channel describes itself as a "Military Simulation Channel" that aims to simulate war-related articles appearing in the news. It has shared multiple war simulation videos on the channel. Earlier too, videos from Arma 3 were passed off as real footage from the Russia-Ukraine war. India Today debunked many such claims. Thus, it’s clear that a video game simulation has been shared as battle between the Russian military and Wagner forces.
