India Today Fact Check
This video is six-years-old and from Tibet.
Intense rains in Gujarat on June 23 reportedly led to widespread flood-like conditions in the western state. As per reports, at least five people died, with three from Rajkot and two from Junagadh being swept away by fast-moving flood waters. In its aftermath, a video making the rounds on social media claimed to show a building in the state collapsing because of the rains.
The video shared on Facebook showed a multi-storey yellow building toppling down and collapsing into rubble as it hit the ground.
This video was also shared by several YouTube channels, with titles that claimed this happened in Gujarat during the recent rains.
The clip was shared on the Inshorts' public app on July 18. There, however, it was alleged that this incident took place in Himachal Pradesh during floods in the state. An archived version of this can be seen here.
India Today found that the video is neither from Gujarat nor from Himachal Pradesh. In fact, it’s not even from India. It’s from Tibet.
Our Probe
Upon reverse-searching keyframes from the viral video, we came across the same clip uploaded to the YouTube channel of US-based CBS News Texas on July 11, 2017. The video was titled: “Floods In Tibet Wash Away Building.”
A subsequent search using refined keywords led us to this clip uploaded to the YouTube channel of CGTN, a Chinese media outlet, on July 10, 2017.
The channel noted that the incident took place in the Jiangda township in Tibet's autonomous region, where a building built on the edge of a river collapsed and was washed away. According to a Newsweek report, persistent torrential rain triggered the building’s collapse on July 8, 2017. Because of a sharp increase in the water level of the Ziqu River, the foundation of the building was washed away. This led to its collapse.
All residents of the building had reportedly been evacuated before the collapse and no casualties have been reported. The Guardian reported that relentless heavy rains forced almost 1.6 million people in central China to evacuate their homes.
Thus, it is more than evident that an old and unrelated video from Tibet was falsely shared as a recent incident in India.
