Those sharing the video blamed the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party, the ruling party in the state. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The viral video is from Simili, Odisha. Prasant Kumar Swain, a panchayat extension officer was caught on camera using the Indian tricolour to clean furniture. Disrespecting the Indian National Flag is a serious offence. And ahead of Republic Day, a video’s been shared widely on social media that shows a man wiping tables and chairs in an office, and finally his own hands, with what looks like the Indian tricolour. Allegedly, the man in the video was the Deputy Registrar of Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh. Those sharing the video blamed the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party, the ruling party in the state. AFWA's investigation, however, found that the video is not from Andhra Pradesh at all. AFWA PROBE Using relevant keywords and a reverse image search, we found that the video was from Odisha. Reportedly, the person seen using the national flag as a dusting cloth was Prasant Kumar Swain, a panchayat extension officer at the Simili Gram Panchayat. Per the Times of India, the incident occurred at the Simili Gram Panchayat office in Puri in October 2022. A meeting was scheduled to take place in the office and before that, Swain discovering the furniture was dusty, wiped them with the Indian National Flag. The video was reportedly shot by a ward member, and following its leaking on social media, the police booked Swain under the Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act, 1971. Following his arrest and public outcry, on January 12, 2023, Swain reportedly apologised for disrespecting the national flag in front of the media. It’s noteworthy that the Kerala Police, on its official Facebook page, informed on January 21 that many had supposedly inquired about the same video. The Kerala Police also reiterated that the incident was from Odisha and mentioned Swain’s name as well. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
