India Today Fact Check
The video is at least a year old and has no relation to the Karnataka Assembly elections.
In Karnataka, the Bharatiya Janata Party lost its last bastion in the south on May 13. In its aftermath, a video of two women fighting in what looks like a BJP office has gone viral. Allegedly, it showed a young woman fighting with her parents for supporting the saffron party in the recently-held Karnataka Assembly elections.
A Twitter user sharing the video wrote, "An Eye opener video. A girl went against her own family which is supporting #BJP #KarnatakaElectionResults2023." The archived version of the tweet can be seen here.
India Today's investigation found that the video is more than a year old and has nothing to do with the Karnataka elections.
Our probe
A reverse image search of the viral video led us to older tweets from 2022. Twitter user Avishek Goyal, taking a jab at the BJP, tweeted the viral video on April 19, 2022. He wrote in Hindi, “While one should not poke into the domestic disputes of others, one must see this.” Responding to a comment, Goyal said this video was from Delhi.
The same day, it was tweeted by filmmaker and journalist Vinod Kapri, who wrote in Hindi: “Such violence has taken place in the drawing rooms and WhatsApp groups of every house.”
We also came across a news report by Jansatta published on April 20, 2022. The report also attributed the video's origin to Goyal. However, it distinctly stated that the location of the incident and the reason behind the brawl couldn't be ascertained.
While we couldn't independently determine where the brawl between two women took place or even why it happened, it is clear that the video has been in circulation for a year and predates the Karnataka Assembly polls.
