These photos show a Hindu woman called Ayushi Yadav who was murdered by her father Nitesh Yadav. The police confirmed to AFWA that there was no ‘love jihad’ angle to the story.
In the aftermath of the recent grisly story of Aaftab Poonawala being accused of murdering his partner Shraddha Walkar and later chopping up her corpse to dispose it, stories of alleged “love jihad” have been widely shared on social media. Love jihad is a far-right conspiracy theory that purports Muslim men target non-Muslim women to convert them to Islam by means of seduction, feigning love, kidnapping, and marriage.
One such story of alleged “love jihad” came with a gruesome set of photos of a dead woman wrapped in a plastic sheet lying alongside a red trolley bag. These photos were shared with captions like, “Another woman, found packed in a suitcase, becomes the victim of love jihad. Keep sleeping, Hindus. This is how women will keep dying.” Those sharing the posts also claimed that the body was discovered on the Yamuna Expressway in Uttar Pradesh.
Some shared photos of the incident without mentioning “love jihad”. However, they used euphemisms like “Abdul” to imply that the woman seen in the photos was killed by a Muslim man. This post has been archived here.
AFWA’s investigation found that all such claims were categorically false. According to the police, Nitesh Yadav, the father of Ayushi Yadav, the dead woman seen in the photos, confessed to killing her.
AFWA PROBE
When we looked for reports of any such recent incident on the Yamuna Expressway, we found a tweet by the Mathura Police that said the dead woman from the viral photos was found stuffed in a trolley bag on November 18 on the Yamuna Expressway in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh. The police later identified her as Ayushi Yadav, a resident of Delhi’s Badarpur.
The Mathura police tweeted on November 21 that Ayushi was murdered by her father Nitesh Yadav and that her mother Brijbala helped him dispose of the body. The police said in a statement that Ayushi had married a man called Chatrapal against the wishes of her family.
According to the statement, there was a heated argument between Ayushi and her father on November 17 during which he shot her twice using his revolver. Later in the dead of the night, Nitesh and Brijbala transported her corpse in their car, disposed of it on the Yamuna Expressway, and returned home.

AFWA contacted Mathura’s assistant superintendent of police MP Singh who rubbished any claims of an interfaith relationship and “love jihad”. He said that Ayushi had married a man called Chatrapal Singh Gurjar, who belonged to a different caste. Singh added that Ayushi would often leave home without informing the family. Her father Nitesh was worried that she would bring dishonour to the family. This, Singh said, was what led to the murder.
The Indian Express, Outlook and The Times of India also reported that Ayushi was killed by her father Nitesh Yadav.
Thus, it is clear that this grisly tale was falsely given a communal spin by many on social media.
