Fact Check
Which factors determine skin color?
Human skin reflects a variety of tones and colours. Several factors influence skin colour, but genetics determines constitutive skin colour. The enzyme tyrosinase is primarily responsible for the genetic mechanism that controls human skin colour. Melanin, the primary determinant of human skin colour, is produced in the skin by melanocytes. Thus, it should be noted that the genes that determine skin colour are controlled by melanin quantity and quality. Also, genetic factors influence skin color, but this can be further affected by exposure to sunlight, which can trigger the production of melanin and tanning reactions.
Vitamin D, like melanin, has been shown to regulate cellular proliferation and differentiation in various tissues, including the skin, which may influence skin colour.
In one of the posts of social media it is shared that one can instantly whiten their skin, especially their private parts, armpits, knees and elbows by applying a cream.
Can a Korean skin whitening cream whiten skin instantly?
No. Korean skin whitening creams, or any skin whitening creams for that matter, do not provide instant results. The process of skin whitening or lightening takes time and consistent use of such products over a period of weeks or months. In fact, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved any over-the-counter skin whitening creams that can whiten skin instantly.
Some skin whitening creams contain ingredients that can lighten the skin over time, but these ingredients do not work instantaneously. Skin-lightening products usually work by reducing the production of melanin, a pigment that gives color to the skin. These ingredients include hydroquinone, kojic acid, and azelaic acid. These products usually require regular and consistent use over a period of time to see any noticeable results, and individual results can vary. However, these ingredients can also irritate the skin, and they should only be used under the supervision of a doctor. Apart from the potential risks, the effects will quickly dissipate.
On redirecting to the mentioned link on the claim, we found the product named, “Beauty. Dr solution for skin. ” However, on the other hand, a different product named, “Goat Milk” is displayed in the video. For either of the product, we could not find the ingredient list and therefore we cannot comment on the effectiveness of individual components. Such advertisements deliberately lack clarity on the functionality of their products, employing vagueness as a strategy. With an intention to inundate the user, the ads make numerous assertions that are diverse in nature.
Dr Reena Majithia, Consultant Dermatologist & Cosmetologist comments, “Some of the Korean skin whitening creams do contain a range of therapeutic ingredients such as Vitamin C, glutathione, hyaluronic acid, and sunscreen. Depending on their concentrations, these ingredients can be effective for both preventing and treating various pigmentation-inducing conditions. However, it’s important to understand that the process of skin whitening is gradual and not instant. While these creams can yield positive results over time, the notion of instant skin whitening is often achieved through cosmetic camouflage. Products like foundations, BB/CC creams, and similar cosmetic options utilize ingredients like silica, water emulsions, and pigments to create an immediate brightening effect. It’s crucial to note that this instant brightening is solely due to the camouflaging properties of these products and is temporary. It’s always recommended to consult a professional to understand the most suitable options based on individual skin concerns.”
Skin whitening products, including creams and lotions, often claim to lighten or brighten the skin tone. However, it is important to approach such claims with caution. Instant skin whitening is not possible with any cream or product.
Dr. Jyoti Agarkar, MD (Dermatology) explains, “We’ve been fortunate to have a wonderful body and skin. Instead of trying to change our skin color, it’s essential to value and nurture them. I consistently recommend my patients to adopt a wholesome diet, exercise, sufficient sleep, and proper hydration. These practices unveil a natural radiance that surpasses any artificial skin whitening. When selecting skincare items, opt for those suited to your skin type.”
It’s important to note that rapid or instant skin whitening is not considered safe or healthy. Quick changes in skin color can lead to adverse reactions, such as skin irritation, uneven pigmentation, or other skin-related issues. It’s always advisable to consult a dermatologist before using any skin-lightening products and to follow their recommendations for safe and effective use. Additionally, it’s important to use sunscreen and practice good skincare habits to maintain the health and appearance of your skin.
