A photo featuring All India Trinamool Congress leaders Mahua Moitra and Sayani Ghosh seemingly asleep during a Parliament session is making the rounds on social media. The photo featured Midnapore MP June Malia watching the session while sitting between the two leaders who sat with their eyes closed. Those sharing the photo took a swipe at the leaders, writing, "West Bengal's Krishna Nagar MP Mahua Moitra and Jadavpur MP Sayani Ghosh spent the whole night thinking about the development projects of respective regions. Hence, they decided to sleep in Parliament. Krishnanagar and Jadavpur people are really 'FORTUNATE' to get them". Its archive can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that this photo is misleading. In the actual footage of the Parliament, both the leaders could be seen thumping their desks as they listened to Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Ganpat Sawant’s address. OUR PROBE We looked at the footage of recent Parliament sessions available on the YouTube channel of Sansad TV and found a video from June 26. Its thumbnail featured TMC MPs Mahua Moitra, June Malia, and Sayani Ghosh, sitting behind Mumbai South MP Arvind Ganpat Sawant. In it, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Arvind congratulated Om Birla on being re-elected as Lok Sabha Speaker while addressing the Parliament. At the 1:57 mark, Arvind Sawant said. “What we need is harmony, not hatred.” At that moment, MPs sitting behind Arvind, including Mahua Moitra and Sayani Ghosh, begin thumping their desks. During this, both the leaders lowered their eyes for a bit and a screenshot of this exact moment was shared with misleading claims. The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha began on June 24 and the 264th session of Rajya Sabha started on June 27. During the first three days, newly elected MPs took oaths and elected the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. President Droupadi Murmu addressed a joint sitting of both houses on June 27, following which Lok Sabha was adjourned till July 1 as Opposition members stormed the well of the House demanding a discussion on the NEET issue.
