| - The website reproductiverights.gov is no longer online. Based on archived pages, the website was online just days before Trump's inauguration. However, we do not know why the site is down and have reached out to the Trump administration to learn more.
In January 2025, as U.S. President Donald Trump took office, many people online noticed one particular government website was no longer available. The site, reproductiverights.gov, which was operational during the previous administration, was apparently offline according to numerous posts online and questions sent to us by Snopes readers.
Readers asked us whether the Trump administration had shut down the site, many of them pointing to the TikTok video below that claimed: "Donald Trump's administration has officially shut down reproductiverights.gov, which was a government-funded site that provided information and resources to women seeking reproductive care."
We opened reproductiverights.gov on multiple browsers and found the website is indeed offline. The website appeared to be functional at least as recently as Jan. 15, 2025, based on archival links. Trump was inaugurated on Jan. 20, 2025, which is when the site in question was reportedly taken down. As such we rate this claim as true.
However, we do not know why the site was taken down, whether it was part of the new administration's agenda or a technical issue. We have reached out to the Trump administration for more information and will update this story accordingly.
According to archival website archive.org, reproductiverights.gov was online as recently as Jan. 15, 2025. Archive.li, another site that archives web pages, had its most-recent archive of the page from November 2024.
Reproductiverights.gov was set up in 2022 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as part of an awareness campaign for people searching for abortion resources and other reproductive-health guidance. The site had a "Know Your Rights" fact sheet that included, among other topics, "Your Right to Access Abortion."
After the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade — the 1973 ruling that guaranteed federal abortion protections for all women — in June 2022, the government website had the following information:
As a result of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, access to abortion will depend on the state you live in even more than before.
Mifepristone, in a regimen with misoprostol, has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 2000 for the termination of early pregnancy, and is safe and effective when used as directed. Mifepristone for medication abortion currently is available for dispensing by mail by certified prescribers or by certified pharmacies for prescriptions issued by certified prescribers, in addition to in-person dispensing in clinics, medical offices, and hospitals.
The above information refers to a drug that can be used to terminate a pregnancy within 10 weeks of gestation.
The site also said, "If you need help paying for an abortion, abortion funds may be able to provide financial assistance. Information about abortion funds and resources to help are available at AbortionFinder.org."
It is possible that the Trump administration took down this site, given that Trump has proudly boasted many times about being responsible for overturning Roe v. Wade (though it was a Supreme Court decision) and has said that abortion rules should be left up to the states. Removing the website would be in line with the new administration's policy. However, we cannot say this with certainty given that there is no official or independent confirmation.
