Do pomegranates directly balance hormones?
No, pomegranates don’t directly regulate hormones. They contain phytoestrogens, which are plant compounds with a weak oestrogen-like effect, but these are not strong enough to balance hormones. While phytoestrogens may interact slightly with oestrogen receptors, they do not resolve complex hormonal issues and should not replace medical treatments.
A 2022 study found that pomegranate consumption improved menopausal symptoms in 78 women. However, results are unclear due to small sample sizes and potential bias. Although pomegranates may help with menopausal symptoms, larger studies are needed to confirm their benefits.
Scientific research is yet to confirm a direct link between eating pomegranates and balanced hormone levels. Nutrient-rich foods like pomegranates support overall health, but achieving hormonal balance depends on various factors and often requires specific treatment.
We got in touch with Shruti K Bhardwaj, Chief Clinical Nutritionist at Zydus Hospital, Ahmedabad, for her take on the use of pomegranate for hormonal balance in women. Can phytoestrogens in pomegranates help with hormonal symptoms?
Not necessarily. Phytoestrogens have been studied for their potential to relieve menopause symptoms, but their effects are inconsistent. Most studies find no effect of plant-based phytoestrogens on hormone levels in postmenopausal women. However, some research shows small drops in testosterone after short-term intake of pomegranate or certain supplements, though overall testosterone levels stayed the same.
Still, these findings aren’t strong enough to suggest that pomegranate can effectively address hormonal fluctuations. Additionally, these studies often use concentrated extracts rather than the whole fruit, making results inconclusive.

What are the health benefits of pomegranates?

They contain compounds like punicalagins and anthocyanins, which have anti-inflammatory effects and may support heart health and immune function. These benefits contribute to overall health but are not specific to hormonal balance.
Eating pomegranates as part of a balanced diet can support general wellness, but this alone will not regulate hormone levels or treat hormone-related conditions.
Is pomegranate consumption risk-free?
No, eating pomegranates is not entirely without risks. Pomegranate seeds contain fibre that promotes digestive health. However, consuming them in excess may increase the risk of constipation, especially in people unaccustomed to a high-fibre diet. Additionally, pomegranate juice may interact with certain medications, including statins and blood pressure drugs, as it can inhibit enzymes that help metabolise these drugs. Those allergic to pomegranates might experience itching or swelling, and in rare cases, a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a healthcare provider before using pomegranate extracts or supplements.
Can pomegranates replace treatment for hormone-related issues?
No, relying solely on pomegranates to manage hormonal issues is not advised. Conditions like PCOS, thyroid disorders, and menopause-related symptoms require professional guidance and treatment.
