  • Last Updated on February 6, 2024 by Aditi Gangal Quick Take A social media video claims that tea made of guava leaves, cloves and turmeric can cure diabetes. We fact checked and found the claim to be False. Consuming these ingredients may manage diabetes symptoms to a certain extent but they cannot cure diabetes completely. The Claim An Instagram video with the tagline ‘This is curing diabetes’ showcases a brewing recipe using guava leaves, cloves, and turmeric, claiming that this tea can help cure diabetes. The video has garnered over 28,447 likes. We have attached a screenshot of the post below: Fact Check What is diabetes? Diabetes is a chronic health condition characterized by elevated blood sugar levels. It occurs when the body either does not produce enough insulin (a hormone that regulates blood sugar) or cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. There are different types of diabetes, including Type 1 and Type 2, each with its own causes and management approaches. Common symptoms include increased thirst, frequent urination, and unexplained weight loss. Proper management involves medication, a balanced diet, regular exercise, and lifestyle adjustments. It is a lifelong condition that requires ongoing care to prevent complications. Is there any cure for diabetes? No. As of now, diabetes cannot be cured. However, it can enter remission when blood sugar levels return to normal through a comprehensive approach involving medication, lifestyle adjustments, and weight loss. Diabetes.org.uk explicitly states that there is no cure for diabetes. Dietitian Kajal Gupta emphasizes that diabetes results from permanent damage to pancreatic cells or increased insulin sensitivity, making complete cure unlikely. However, it can be effectively managed through a combination of proper medication, diet, and lifestyle adjustments. While ongoing research explores ways to ‘reverse’ or ‘cure’ Type 2 Diabetes, conclusive evidence is lacking. Nutritionist Avni Kaul states that diabetes is a progressive disease but can be managed and controlled with dietary and lifestyle measures. Is it possible for a mixture of guava leaves, cloves, and turmeric to provide a cure for diabetes? The answer is No. A mixture of guava leaves, cloves, and turmeric cannot cure diabetes. But some research papers informs that guava leaves, clove and turmeric can control diabetes. A 2020 study on mice informs that guava leaves extract can improve blood sugar levels and reduce body weight in type 2 diabetes. This is likely due to a decrease in insulin resistance and activation of specific liver pathways. A 2013 research shows that traditional curcumin has a crucial role in preventing and treating diabetes and related problems. Curcumin can help with many aspects of diabetes, like insulin resistance, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, and damage to insulin-producing cells. It can also protect against diabetes complications Besides this, a 2019 trial on humans with 250 mg clove for 12 days showed a notable decrease in blood sugar levels following meals. This lab experiment showed that this clove supplement promoted glucose uptake by cells, reduced glucose production in liver cells, and inhibited the activity of enzymes responsible for carbohydrate breakdown. In conclusion, diabetes is a complex condition that usually requires medical intervention, lifestyle changes, and a balanced diet for management. While these ingredients have individual merits, relying solely on them for diabetes treatment is not supported by conclusive research. It’s crucial to approach diabetes management with evidence-based methods.
