  • Fact Check: This almost decade-old video does not show world's largest hydroelectric dam bursting during flood AFWA's investigation found that this is an old video from Uttarakhand. The world's largest hydroelectric dam is the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River in China. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The Three Gorges Dam in central China is the largest hydroelectric dam in the world. There are no recent reports about it breaking. This video is from Uttarakhand’s Srinagar and it is more than nine years old. A video has been making the rounds on social media with the claim that it shows the world's largest hydroelectric dam bursting. In the video, one can see river water flooding a dam. AFWA’s investigation found that this is an old video from Uttarakhand. The world’s largest hydroelectric dam is the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River in China. AFWA Probe The Three Gorges Dam in central China is the largest hydroelectric dam in the world. In 2012, the dam located in the Hubei province of China took over the first place replacing the Itaipº hydroelectric power plant in Brazil and Paraguay. However, we couldn’t find any recent reports about the Three Gorges Dam bursting because of floodwaters. In 2020, the Three Gorges Dam was hit heavily by torrential rain and several of its outlets were opened to discharge water. Where is the viral video from? At multiple instances in the video in question we can hear people speaking in Hindi. This gave the first cue that the video could be from India. We then did a reverse search of the video in question on Yandex and found a longer version of the same video uploaded to a YouTube channel in December 2013. According to the description, the video was from the Alaknanda Hydro Electric Power Project located in Srinagar, in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. According to media reports, a flood in June 2013 affected the hydro project, which was then in the developing stage. To confirm the location of the video in question we reached out to Tejpal Singh Chauhan, India Today’s correspondent in the Pauri Garhwal district. Chauhan confirmed to us that the video is indeed from the Alaknanda Hydro Power Generating Station in Srinagar. He also sent us a recent video shot from the same location as seen in the viral video. A comparison between the screenshot from the viral video and the one sent by our correspondent can be seen below. Google geolocation of the spot can be seen here. It is hence clear that the video in question is from Uttarakhand and does not show the world's largest hydropower plant bursting.
