  • A video showing police personnel beating, dragging, and arresting people has gone viral on X (formerly Twitter). The claim: Those sharing this claim have claimed that it shows the Uttar Pradesh police taking action against people who pelted stones on a train ferrying devotees to the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, by evicting them from their homes. The Quint also received a query to verify this claim on its WhatsApp tipline. (Archived versions of more posts sharing this claim can be seen here and here.) But...?: The claim is false. The video shows the West Bengal police taking action against All India Trinamool Congress (AITMC) workers in Suri village in the state's Birbhum disctrict. How did we find out the truth?: We ran a reverse image search using Google Lens, which led us to a clearer version of the video on YouTube. It was shared on 29 January with a caption in Bangla, which mentioned that it showed a clash in Suri village in West Bengal. Taking a cue from this, we conducted a keyword search with the term 'Suri clash' on Google. The search returned a result, showing another YouTube video, this time by news organisation ABP Ananda. It was titled, "Birbhum TMC Clash: Trinamool factional clash in Siuri, police injured." The report's description said that two factions of the TMC in West Bengal's Suri got into a clash, after which the police arrived to arrest a TMC youth leader. However, when the police arrived at the spot, locals attacked them. As per The Times of India, 20 people were held for attacking police personnel. The report said that the clash occurred over a land dispute in the village, adding that after some miscreants had arrived with crude bombs and firearms, threatening the people there. Locals overpowered and restrained the person making these threats, who was identified as one Babu Ansari. After being notified about the incident, cops arrived to arrest Ansari, when his brother, Amir Ansari, reportedly grabbed Suri police station inspector-in-charge Sanchayan Banerjee by his collar. Both brothers were subsequently arrested. The Telegraph said that Amir was out on bail after facing charges of arson, and was among the 20 arrested for the violence. Conclusion: A clip showing police action against people in Suri, West Bengal, is being shared to falsely claim that it shows cops taking action against people who pelted stones on a train carrying passengers to the Maha Kumbh Mela.
