India Today Fact Check
A five-year-old video of a stage collapse in Pakistan was falsely shared with a communal twist.
In a video that’s been shared by many on social media, a man can be seen delivering a sermon when all of a sudden the stage he and others were on collapses. Allegedly, this happened when the man, an Imam, spoke against Jews in Pakistan.
Sharing this video, a Facebook user wrote, “Imam in Pakistan preaches that he had a dream in which he said that all Jews must be exterminated. He goes on to say, ‘If this is not true, may the ground sink beneath me, and look what happens.”

Our Probe
A reverse image search of key frames from the video led us to a higher quality and larger version of the clip shared by journalist Aditya Raj Kaul on X on July 18, 2018. Per the post, the stage collapsed during a Jamaat-e-Islami rally in the Mohmand district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan. Among the people on the stage was Jamaat-e-Islami leader Siraj-ul-Haq.
Subsequent keyword searches led us to the video uploaded to the YouTube channel of “Public News” on the same date. The video was titled: “Stage collapses during Jamaat-e-Islami election campaign.” This indicates that the viral video is not recent at all.
We also found media reports about the incident, which relayed the same information. According to Geo TV, the stage collapsed due to overcrowding and that no one was gravely injured.
Was it an anti-Semitic speech?
We showed this video to an Urdu-language speaker, who confirmed to India Today.in that before the stage collapsed, the person was saying, “We welcome, Salar-e-Qafila (our leader), Quaid-e-Millat-e-Islamia (leader of the Muslim nation), Naib Sadar Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (Deputy President Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (a religious political party), Ameer Jamat-e-Islami Pakistan (Leader of Jamaat-e-Islami)." It was just an introduction for religious and political leaders.
This shows that no anti-Semitic speech was made in the viral video. Thus, it is more than clear to say that a five-year-old video of a stage collapse in Pakistan was shared with a misleading claim.
