India Today Fact Check
This video dates back to February 17 and shows Cyclone Freddy shot from the International Space Station.
A video of what appears to be the satellite view of a massive storm has been widely shared on social media as what Cyclone Biparjoy looks like from space.
A Twitter user shared the video and wrote, “Biparjoy Cyclone seen through space.” The archived version of this tweet can be seen here.
India Today found that the viral video is neither recent nor does it show Cyclone Biparjoy. It was captured on February 17, 2023, and shows Tropical Cyclone Freddy.
Our Probe
Many people responded to the viral tweets, saying that the video showed Cyclone Freddy and not Biparjoy. Following this, we found the video shared on a Twitter account called “ISS Above” on February 18, 2023. There were two key differences, however. This video’s orientation was horizontal and not vertical. And it did not contain music like the viral video.
The tweet mentioned that the video showed the eye of Tropical Cyclone Freddy captured live from the International Space Station. The ISS-Above, per its website, is an educational device that connects people to the International Space Station.
We rotated the viral video to 270 degrees using an online tool and compared it with the video shared by ISS Above. This made it clear that they were the same video.
When Cyclone Freddy was captured from the International Space Station in February, many media outlets reported it. According to a Washington Post report, Cyclone Freddy lasted 31 days and became Earth's longest-lived tropical cyclone. Over its lifetime, Freddy tracked more than 8,000 km.
Biparjoy too was captured from space
United Arab Emirates astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi recently shared images of Biparjoy taken from the International Space Station. They can be seen below.
To sum it up, an old video of a different cyclone was falsely shared as what Cyclone Biparjoy looked like from space.
