  • A video clip of a man with a knife standing amid a crowd of onlookers and being shot at by the police is going viral. It is claimed that UP Police shot down Dada Abdul Gaffar of Saharanpur “this Sunday” at the marketplace as he threatened and abused the locals and the police. X (formerly Twitter) handle @rajasolank71070 shared the video on September 09, 2024, with the claim that ‘dada’ Abdul Gaffar of Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh was waving his knife and abusing the locals “this Sunday” at a marketplace. As the “Yogi Baba’s police” arrived, he continued his threats and curses. To this, police took action, so that no other Gaffar would try to come out of their holes for the next 10 years, at least. Several X handles, including @sk465g, @KamalR_BJP, @ankit_miishra, @Priyaaa_B, and @MeenakshiTri04, have shared and re-shared the same claim. We noticed that the video along with similar claims had gone viral at least twice in the past. On March 15, 2024, X handle @VinubhaiPatel8 shared the video with a similar claim — that it was from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. According to him, the name of the perpetrator was Abdul Masood. ये है सही जगह व राष्ट्रवादी पार्टी को दिये pic.twitter.com/lwO9FDpqEd — Vinubhai Patel (मोदी का परिवार) (@VinubhaiPatel8) March 15, 2024 A year before that, in March 2023, X handle @surenderb7100 and several others including @maheshyag3, @Himansh21211828, and @jigarceo had made the same claim while sharing the video. ऐसा लिख कर सोशल मिडिया पर वायरल विडिओ#viral pic.twitter.com/UEhHxjyqkG — सुरेन्द्र गुर्जर सलारपुर (@surenderb7100) March 21, 2023 Fact Check We found that UP police fact-checked this video when it had gone viral in March 2024. The official handle of UP Police Fact Check (@UPPViralCheck) said, “The video is not from UP. It is related to an incident in Kalaburagi locality of Karnataka dated 05/02/23. This misleading and malicious claim had been debunked in the past as well…” #UPPViralCheckhttps://t.co/kG11UFekOn… https://t.co/PzImeHJAna pic.twitter.com/jDuLcfb704 — UPPOLICE FACT CHECK (@UPPViralCheck) March 16, 2024 We also noted that Saharanpur Police had shared the above tweet in reply to the tweet by @rajasolank71070 (embedded at the beginning of the story). Taking a cue from this, we performed a keyword search which led us to several news reports from February 6, 2023. A report by the Hindustan Times states that the incident occurred around 9 pm on Saturday (February 4, 2023) in Bhrahmapura police station area. The man seen in the video brandishing a knife was identified by police as Mohammed Fazal Jafar, a 28-years old fruit vendor. The Kalaburagi police in Karnataka approached the man and asked him to put down the knife, however, as he threatened to attack, an officer opened fire at Jafar and recovered the weapon from him. Another news article by the Indian Express stated, “Police in Karnataka’s Kalaburagi opened fire at a man’s lower limbs after he was found carrying knives and allegedly threatening the public in a market area. This story, however, claimed the incident had happened on Sunday, February 5. Both the reports carried visuals which matched the visuals in the viral video. This slideshow requires JavaScript. We also found a video report on YouTube published by The News Minute on February 6, 2023. It mentions, “The Kalaburagi police shot and injured a man brandishing a knife at a market on February 5. The accused had been threatening the public with the knife in the crowded market place when the police fired three shots. The accused was arrested and later to taken to the hospital to treat his injuries.” See screenshot below: To sum up, several claims made with the viral video are false. Firstly, it is not a recent incident; it dates back to February 2023. Secondly, the name of the perpetrator is Mohammed Fazal Jafar and not Abdul Gaffar or Abdul Masood. Finally, the place of occurrence is not Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh but Kalaburagi, Karnataka. Ankita Mahalanobish is an intern at Alt News.
