  • Recently, instability in Chattogram was sparked by the arrest of Hindu religious leader Chinmoy Krishna Das and the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam. Amidst this unrest, a video circulated on X (formerly Twitter) claiming to show an incident of mass rape of Hindu women in Chattogram. Posts on X(Twitter) Propagating the Claim: Fact Check The Rumor Scanner team’s investigation has confirmed that the circulated video is unrelated to any incident of mass rape of Hindu women in Chattogram. In fact, the video pertains to an entirely different event that occurred on November 29. Upon reviewing the video, the Rumor Scanner team found no evidence of any content related to rape. To verify the claim, a keyword search led to the discovery of the original video, which was published on November 29 by the YouTube channel Sandwip TV. The video is titled “Tense Situation at Bundle Road, Patharghata, Kotwali in Chattogram” (link). The video description confirms that the footage was captured in the Bundle Road area of Patharghata, under the jurisdiction of Kotwali Police Station, Chattogram, on November 29. Further verification through Facebook posts, including this one (Archive), also confirms the same location and date. Additionally, a report published by the local news outlet Cvoice24 on November 29, titled “Tension at Patharghata Eased by Law Enforcement” (link), provided details of the events that transpired that day. According to the report, a protest march was held after Friday prayers to condemn Advocate Saiful’s murder. The protest led to a tense situation as two groups gathered near the Kalibari temple. An eyewitness reported that one group had gathered near the Kalibari temple after Friday prayers, prompting the arrival of another group at the scene. Police and military personnel were deployed to diffuse the situation and restore order. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station, Md. Abdul Karim, stated: “I also arrived at the scene after receiving information. There was tension between the two groups, but we managed to calm them down. Currently, the situation is under control.” He further clarified, “There was no vandalism or injuries. Moreover, no untoward incidents occurred elsewhere. We are actively monitoring the situation to maintain law and order.” The investigation revealed that no rape claims were made by locals regarding the incident. Additionally, no reports or complaints were filed with the police related to rape during the event. Moreover, no credible media outlets or reliable sources have reported any incidents of mass rape of Hindu women in Chattogram. Conclusion The claim that the circulated video depicts a mass rape of Hindu women in Chattogram is completely false. The video is from an unrelated event on November 29 in Patharghata, Chattogram (Chittagong), which involved tensions following a protest. There is no credible evidence or reports to support the claim of such an incident.
