  • Fact Check: Kamala Harris was NOT drunk! Edited video of US Vice President goes viral In the video, Kamala Harris can be heard delivering an incoherent and slurred speech at what appeared to be a rally for reproductive rights. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The audio in this clip was edited. It was taken from a clip shared by a supposed impersonator of Harris. A viral video of United States Vice President Kamala Harris appears to show her delivering an incoherent, slurred speech. Many on social media shared the clip, mocking her and speculating if she was drunk during the event. In the video, Harris is heard saying, “Today is today, and yesterday was today yesterday. Tomorrow will be today, tomorrow. So live today, so the future today will be as the past today, as it is tomorrow.” The archived versions of such posts can be seen here and here. India Today found that the video in question was edited. The voice in the video is not of Harris but of an impersonator. Our Probe In the video in question, we noticed people holding placards that said the words “Reproductive Freedom”. Taking cue from this, we ran a keyword search and found the original video shared by the Facebook page of a nonprofit organisation called NARAL Pro-Choice America on April 26. According to the page, the video was from a speech made by Harris at a reproductive rights rally held at Howard University in Washington DC on April 25. At no point during this speech, did we hear Harris making the incomprehensible statement heard in the viral clip. Instead, the Vice President spoke about the importance of reproductive freedom. She also spoke about running for re-election alongside US President Joe Biden. The original video was also uploaded to the YouTube channel of the New York Post on April 26, 2023. In fact, the viral clip appeared to be an audio-edited version of the video shared by the New York Post. We also found the transcript of the Vice President’s speech on the White House website. No sentence in this transcript matched the words in the viral video. We also noticed that in the original video, the text on Harris' podium read, “Fighting for Reproductive Freedom.” However, in the viral video, the text on the podium read: “Ramble Rants Reproductive Freedom.” Using this clue, we found that the edited video was shared by a Twitter account called “Ramble Rants” whose bio mentioned “MAGA”, the election slogan popularised by former US President Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential elections. The account posted the edited video on April 29. The next day, the account clarified that the tweet was a meme and shared a video of a supposed Kamala Harris impersonator. The audio in that clip was the same as the viral video. It is hence clear that the viral video was edited and doesn’t show a real speech made by the US Vice President.
