  • Recently, a video has been circulated on the internet claiming that a Hindu girl in Bangladesh was tortured and drowned to death. In the video, an angry crowd can be seen harassing a girl in various ways before forcing her into a pond. Watch such videos circulated on X (formerly Twitter) here (Archive), and here (Archive). Watch similar videos circulated last August here (Archive) and here (Archive). Salwan Momika, a controversial Iraqi-born figure known for publicly burning the Quran in Sweden, shared the same video on his X account both recently and last August. The video he shared in August, accompanied by similar claims, was viewed approximately 10.9 million times and received reactions from around 69,000 accounts. Fact Check Rumor Scanner’s investigation reveals that the claim regarding a Hindu girl being tortured and drowned in Bangladesh is false. The girl in question, Afsana Ebad Tikli, is actually Muslim, and there is no evidence suggesting she has died. During the investigation into this claim, a reverse image search led to an extended version of the viral video, shared on August 7 on a Facebook account named Sakir Ullah. You can find the extended version here. Upon reviewing the video, it becomes clear that the viral clip only shows the girl being led to the pond, while the extended version confirms she was brought back safely. Toward the end of the video, a man is seen escorting her away. Additionally, the video, recorded on August 7 in Brahmanbaria, identifies the woman as a leader of the Chhatra League. Using this information, a keyword search revealed another video on a YouTube channel called Bangla Mirror News. Published on August 8, the video is titled, “Chhatra League Leader Detained by Crowd in Brahmanbaria.” You can watch the video here. Reviewing the 5-minute-and-41-second video reveals similarities to the earlier clip. However, in the ending of this video, the harassed woman is seen leaving the location in a rickshaw with the man from the earlier clip. Further investigation led to another video shared on August 10 on a Facebook account named Mohammad Mostafa. You can find the video here. The video shows items retrieved from the harassed woman’s bag. Toward the end of the video, a few pictures of the harassment incident are shown. Additionally, in this footage, a female harasser is seen showing various items from the woman’s bag to the camera. At one point, an identification card for polling agent duties in the Upazila Council election is taken from her bag. The card clearly shows the name “Afsana Ebad,” confirming the harassed woman’s identity. Therefore, the claim is actually a video of a Muslim woman, Afsana Ebad Tikli—a Chhatra(Student) League member. Conclusion The viral claims surrounding the video alleging the torture and murder of a Hindu girl in Bangladesh have been proven false. Investigations reveal that the woman in the video is Afsana Ebad Tikli, a Muslim and a Chhatra League activist, who was harassed but safely rescued.
