Authorities arrested the persons involved in making and spreading this ‘fake’ video. A video of a child’s kidnapping has been shared widely on social media. In the video, a niqab-clad woman approaches a child and touches his shoulder — supposedly pricking him with a narcotic-laced pin. As soon as the child faints, an autorickshaw arrives. Its driver and the woman carry the child into the vehicle. People on Facebook shared the video and appealed to others to remain alert and save children from gangs who kidnap children. AFWA’s investigation found the viral video was a scripted one. This video was shot in Girga, Egypt. In fact, Egyptian authorities have arrested persons involved in making and spreading this video. AFWA PROBE With the help of a reverse image search, we found screengrabs from the video in several news reports published on Arabic websites. According to these reports , the interior ministry of Egypt addressed this video on social media, calling it “fabricated” and “fake”. We found the Egyptian interior ministry’s tweet on video from June 29. According to Egyptian authorities, four residents of Girga, a city in the Sohag Governorate of Upper Egypt, were involved in this incident. The person seen in Niqab is a man dressed as a woman. The entire video is scripted. Reportedly, the purpose of making this video was to earn money by getting more shares and likes on the viral video.
