  • Fact Check: Deepika in tears amid 'Pathaan' controversy? No, old video shows her talking about depression Social media users shared an old video of Deepika Padukone talking about her depression as her reaction to the controversy surrounding her upcoming film 'Pathaan'. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The video is completely unrelated to the ongoing 'Pathaan' controversy. On October 10, 2018, on World Mental Health Day, Padukone opened up about her struggles with clinical depression in this video. The Shah Rukh Khan-Deepika Padukone starrer “Pathaan” has been at the centre of outrage on social media. The film’s song “Besharam Rang” has been criticised heavily by the Hindu right for featuring Padukone in an orange bikini, supposedly an insult to the Hndu religion. Amid this, a video of Padukone crying has been widely shared. In that short clip, the actor can be seen crying while speaking. She said, "I do not think I was able to communicate internally what I was feeling. I knew I had this pit-ish feeling in my stomach. I knew I was scared to wake up. I did not want to wake up. I found comfort in sleep because I felt that was my escape.” She further said, “Like waking up in the opposite struggle. That is something I am still scared of. I do not like the sound of an alarm. I think waking up was tough. I do not want to face the day. Every day I had to wake up to something I did not enjoy that feeling of waking up to an alarm and then going to work. I think I had to do it. I was working every day. Every day was a challenge. I did not know how the day was going to pan out for me. I would be extremely conscious of being surrounded by people. If I needed to break down I did not know where I could do that." Those sharing the video claimed that this was Padukone’s reaction to the incessant trolling over the song and its music video. On December 16, 2022, Samajwadi Party leader and Ex-State Minister Of Uttar Pradesh IP Singh shared the video and wrote in Hindi on Twitter, "Deepika Padukone is the daughter of Mr. Prakash Padukone and the wife of film star Mr. Ranveer. BJP and their government created an atmosphere in the country regarding the film. Now tears in her eyes... This film (Pathaan) will get fame all over the world and this film will do business for more than 500 crores." An archived version of such a post can be seen here. AFWA's investigation found that the video is completely unrelated to the ongoing “Pathaan” controversy. It’s from 2018, when Padukone opened up about her struggles with clinical depression on World Mental Health Day. AFWA Probe A reverse search of the clip’s keyframes led us to a video that was uploaded on the YouTube channel of The Live Love Laugh Foundation on October 10, 2018, titled “Deepika is #NotAshamed” In that video, at the 28-second mark, the actor can be heard saying the words she said in the viral video. Per the description of the video, Padukone had opened up about her mental health struggles. Subsequent searches led us to various news reports on this. On October 10, 2018, NDTV published a report with the headline, "On World Mental Health Day, Emotional Deepika Padukone Says She's #NotAshamed". The story also contained the same video. Time magazine, the Express Tribune, the Logical Indian and many others reported on the video around the same time. Per these reports, on World Mental Health Day, Padukone opened up about battling depression. Thus, it’s clear that the video in question has nothing to do with “Pathaan”.
