OUR PROBE
Using reverse image search, we found screenshots of the viral video in a Navbharat Times report from August 21, 2023. The report said that clashes erupted between farmers who were planning a protest and the police in Sangroor’s Longowal village when farmers tried to block a road and a toll plaza. The clashes led to the death of an old farmer named Preetam Singh who came under the tractor-trolley of a protestor during the disturbance. One policeman also sustained severe injuries in the encounter.
At that time, PTC Punjabi and the Indian Express also published the news reports about this incident.
Gagandeep Singh, a journalist from Punjab, also tweeted this video on August 21, 2023. His watermark is also somewhat visible in the videos going viral right now, which are of poorer quality.
Hence, it’s clear that an old incident was falsely linked to the ongoing farmers’ protests.
