  • False: Wobbling high-rise construction site in viral video is located in Taiwan, not New York The one on TikTok, for example, has 85,600 likes, 3,600 comments and 44,100 shares at the time of writing. All these posts said the video shows what happened in New York. The clip was also included in a compilation of footage (also here) supposedly depicting how New York was hit by the earthquake, which was shared by two media outlets for Belarusians, Belsat TV and Nexta. However, Annie Lab discovered that the video was actually shot in New Taipei city in Taiwan. Just two days before the one in New Jersey, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit the eastern coast of Taiwan. Strong tremors were also felt in New Taipei city located about 120 km from the epicenter and caused significant damage. A TikTok watermark is visible in some versions of the video, which led us to a TikTok account and the original source of the clip. This video was posted on April 3 at 9:55 a.m., about two hours after the Taiwan quake, by a person working at the building construction site. The same account also posted another video showing the same building on April 6 in the comment section. Annie Lab further investigated the footage to confirm the location. We tried to identify the nearby building with a distinctive facade; upon searching online for the list of tallest buildings in Taiwan, we found that the building is the Chicony Electronics Headquarters building in New Taipei city. The Google Maps satellite images and 3D view confirmed that it is the Chicony Electronics Headquarters building. MyGoPen, a verified signatory of the International Fact-checking Network in Taiwan, also published a report debunking the claim on April 9, 2024. Earthquake in Taiwan vs Earthquake in New York The earthquakes in Taiwan and New Jersey occurred in the same week and made headlines worldwide. The damages caused by the earthquake in Taiwan were reportedly severer than in the United States. The 7.2-magnitude earthquake was the strongest earthquake Taiwan experienced in 25 years. The jolt triggered massive landslides and tilted buildings, killing at least 17 people and injuring over a thousand, according to the local media. The most affected area was Hualien near the epicenter. The 4.8-magnitude New Jersey earthquake on April 5 also shook New York City, where many residents felt strong tremors. It was one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded in New Jersey. The U.S. Geological Survey estimated 42 million people felt it according to WKRN News. Many people in New York had captured and shared videos of the earthquake. One of the most popular clips was the footage of the UN Security Council meeting in New York experiencing the tremors.
