  • Fact Check: Woman throwing money at colonised kids is NOT Queen Elizabeth, video is 26 years older than her The video was allegedly shot in one of Africa's British colonies Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video was shot by French filmmaker Gabriel Veyre between 1899 and 1900 in a French colony in Vietnam. Queen Elizabeth II was born in 1926. Queen Elizabeth II’s seven-decade-long reign has been a well-documented one. Following her death, news outlets, among others, have been sharing retrospectives. These feature a lot of monochromatic videos and photos of the monarch in different parts of the once-vast British empire. One such video, that has been shared by many, shows two women throwing what appears to be food at a group of children who can be seen fighting to grab it. One of the women is supposedly Queen Elizabeth II, and this video was allegedly shot in one of Africa’s British colonies. The archived versions of similar posts can be seen here and here. AFWA found that the woman in the video is not Queen Elizabeth. In fact, this video is more than two decades older than the English monarch. AFWA PROBE Upon reverse-searching frames from the video, we came across a screenshot from it on a French website called Catalogue Lumière, which archives films made by the Lumière company in Lyon, France. As per the website, the screenshot was from a film by Gabriel Veyre, shot sometime between 1899 and 1900 at the French colony of Annam, French Indochina (now Vietnam). The film was screened on January 20, 1901, in Lyon, France, under the title “Indo-Chine: Annamese children picking up cash in front of the ladies’ pagoda.” The site said the women in the video were Madame Paul Doumer — the wife of Joseph Athanase Paul Doumer, the Governor-General of French Indochina from 1897 to 1902 — and her daughter. Between 1899 and1900, French filmmaker Gabriel Veyre travelled across the French colonies in Vietnam. He shot around 39 motion pictures and photographs for the French government to exhibit at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle. This was 26 years before Queen Elizabeth II was even born. We searched for the film on YouTube and found a better-quality version uploaded to a channel containing a catalogue of films by Lumière. The video was titled, “Lumière: Annamese children picking up coins in front of the Ladies' Pagoda (1900).” It is clear from the video that neither woman in it resembles the now-dead English monarch. Additionally, we can also see Chinese text written on the building behind the woman. The text, per Google Lens, was about Buddha, which would make sense because the building is a pagoda or a Buddhist place of worship. The video was published by multiple other YouTube channels and websites with the same information. Thus, we concluded that this video did not show Elizabeth II.
