  • FACT CHECK: Did The D.C. Judge Assigned To Trump’s Jan. 6 Case Work At The Same Law Firm As Hunter Biden? A post shared on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter, purports Tanya S. Chutkan, the judge assigned to former President Donald Trump’s Jan. 6 case, and Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, worked at the same law firm. The DC Judge on Trump’s Indictment case worked with Hunter Biden at the same law firm… That same law firm lobbied for Burisma… You can’t make this up anymore.. — Matt Couch (@RealMattCouch) August 3, 2023 Verdict: True Both Chutkan and the younger Biden worked at the firm Boies, Schiller, & Flexner LLP from 2002 to 2014 and 2010 to 2014, respectively. Fact Check: Trump pleaded not guilty to charges that he attempted to overturn the 2020 presidential election in court Thursday, according to The Washington Post. The latest case represents the former president’s third indictment, Reuters reported. “The DC Judge on Trump’s Indictment case worked with Hunter Biden at the same law firm… That same law firm lobbied for Burisma… You can’t make this up anymore..,” the X post, viewed over 25,000 times, purports. The claim that the judge and Hunter Biden worked at the same law firm is true. According to her biography on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia’s website, Chutkan was appointed to her current role in June 2014. Prior to that, she worked at Boies, Schiller, & Flexner LLP for 12 years, where she specialized in litigation and white-collar criminal defense, the same biography indicates. An announcement from the firm revealing that Chutkan made partner in January 2007 notes she’d joined Boies, Schiller, & Flexner in 2002. Chutkan was assigned to Trump’s indictment case by random draw, according to The Washington Post. Likewise, in his memoir, “Beautiful Things,” the younger Biden shared he served as counsel at the same firm from 2010 to 2014. His time at Boies, Schiller, & Flexner is also noted on his Open Secrets profile, though it lists his employment dates from 2009 to 2014. The same profile places his employment at the Ukrainian-based energy company Burisma from 2014 to 2019. The claim that Boies, Schiller, & Flexner lobbied for Burisma is also true. On page 126 of “Beautiful Things,” the younger Biden states, “I brought Burisma to Boies Schiller Flexner, the New York-based law firm where I was of counsel.” Similarly, emails from Hunter’s laptop detailed the firm’s lobbying strategy to Hunter, his business partners, and a Burisma executive in 2014, according to a June 2021 article from the Washington Free Beacon. The lobbying strategy was detailed via emails by Heather King, a partner at Boies, Schiller, & Flexner. Both King’s biography via The Messina Group’s website and her LinkedIn profile confirm she was previously a partner at Boies, Schiller, & Flexner. King worked at the firm from 2007 to 2015 in the roles of partner, counsel, and associate at the firm’s D.C. office, according to her LinkedIn profile. In addition, she joined the firm’s San Francisco office, where she also made partner from 2016 to 2021. King reportedly “took the lead in developing [the firm’s] strategy for Burisma,” according to the emails on the younger Biden’s laptop, the Washington Free Beacon reported.
