  • Fact Check: This is a sandstorm in Suez Canal - NOT Cyclone Biparjoy hitting the Pakistan coast While India and Pakistan prepare for Cyclone Biparjoy, misinformation in the form of old videos from across the world is already flooding social media. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video shows a June 1 sandstorm in Egypt’s Suez Canal. India and Pakistan are on high alert over Cyclone Biparjoy, which is expected to hit both countries’ Arabian Sea coasts on June 15. Meanwhile, a video of a massive sandstorm sweeping across a water body is being shared on social media. Allegedly, this storm was approaching Pakistan’s Karachi. The archived versions of such posts that were also viral in Urdu can be seen here and here. India Today found that the video shows a sandstorm that hit Egypt's Suez Canal on June 1. Our Probe With the help of a reverse image search, we found several media reports that featured the same clip. According to a CNN report published on June 2, the video was from a sandstorm in Egypt's Suez Canal. The report also said while sandstorms are common in Egypt during the summer, this one was “unusually strong”. We also found the same video in a BBC report from the same date. According to it, the sandstorm occurred on June 1. Apart from the Suez Canal, a massive cloud of sand was also seen moving across the road linking Cairo and Suez. Reportedly, one person was killed and at least five were injured when a billboard collapsed as a result of the storm in Egypt's capital Cairo. According to a Reuters report on Cyclone Biparjoy, as India began evacuating people from coastal areas on June 13, four people drowned off Mumbai’s coast. High waves and heavy rains in Gujarat's coastal areas also killed three people in the Kutch and Rajkot districts. It is thus clear that the video in question was from a sandstorm in Egypt’s Suez Canal, and not from anywhere near Pakistan’s coast.
