  • FACT CHECK: Was Ron DeSantis Recently Denied Access To Guantanamo Bay? A post shared on Facebook purports Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis was recently denied access to Guantanamo Bay during a trip. Verdict: False The claim stems from a satirical website. There is no evidence supporting the purported claim. Fact Check: DeSantis recently proposed a sales tax exemption for appliances, including gas stoves, The Hill reported. The exemption follows a potential move to ban gas stoves, which DeSantis labeled as “government overreach,” according to the New York Post. The Facebook post purports DeSantis was recently denied access to Guantanamo Bay. The post further claims the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps blocked DeSantis from attending White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain’s Feb. 3 military tribunal after the governor’s spokesperson, Christina Pushaw had contacted them and informed them of his planned arrival. The claim is false. There are no credible news reports suggesting DeSantis was recently denied access to Guantanamo Bay. Likewise, the claim is neither mentioned on DeSantis’ website nor on his verified social media accounts. In addition, Pushaw has not publicly commented on the claim via her verified Twitter account. A keyword search reveals the claim stems from a Feb. 3 article published on the website “Real Raw News.” A disclaimer included on the site’s “About Us” page indicates it contains “humor, parody, and satire.” (RELATED: Did The Trump Campaign Send This Email Impersonating Ron DeSantis?) The latest article references two earlier pieces published by the site. The first piece purports Klain was arrested by the U.S. Special Forces for crimes regarding the 2020 presidential election. The second piece claims DeSantis previously toured Guantanamo Bay following an unannounced visit on a Learjet 35. Check Your Fact has contacted DeSantis’ office for comment and will update this piece accordingly if one is received.
