  • FACT CHECK: Does This Video Show Footage Captured By The Perseverance Mars Rover? A viral Facebook post claims to show footage captured on Mars by NASA’s Perseverance rover in 2021. Verdict: False The video actually appears to show imagery taken by the Mars Curiosity rover, not Perseverance. The audio, which was not recorded by Perseverance, has been digitally added. Fact Check: NASA’s Perseverance rover successfully landed on Mars last week. Since the rover’s touchdown, social media users have been sharing video and audio that they claim was captured by Perseverance on the planet’s surface. (RELATED: Did NASA Spend More Than $165 Million To Develop Pens That Work In Space?) The video actually appears to stem from 1.8-billion pixel panorama imagery taken by the Curiosity rover, which landed on Mars in 2012. NASA posted the panorama on its website and on YouTube. In other iterations of the same video, a mechanical structure bearing the word “Curiosity” can be seen. Perseverance recently transmitted back the first sounds recorded with microphones from the surface of Mars, NBC News reported. Those first-ever sounds, which can be heard on NASA’s SoundCloud page, do not match the audio in the Facebook video, indicating the audio has been digitally added. In addition to the sounds recorded by Perseverance, NASA also released video from Perseverance’s landing and imaging from its landing site. The Mars rover has a verified Twitter account, where NASA posts updates about the mission. NASA has previously recorded vibrations using a seismometer and air pressure sensor on the InSight Lander. In April 2019, seismic sensors on the InSight Lander also captured the vibrations from a likely “marsquake.”
