  • Fact Check: This is an old video from Guatemala - NOT Pakistanis protesting Imran Khan's arrest A video going viral shows security forces trying to stop a massive crowd. Many claimed this was from a recent protest in Pakistan. India Today, however, found that this video has nothing to do with Pakistan at all. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from 2021 and shows Honduran migrants clashing with Guatemalan security forces. Protests intensified in various cities in Pakistan including Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi following former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s arrest on May 9 in connection with a corruption case. At least eight people were killed and around 300 injured during the protests at the time of writing this. Amid this, a video of security forces trying to stop a sea of people from moving forward was shared by many on social media. Allegedly, this video was from the recent Pakistan protests — it has been shared with hashtags like “Pakistan Republic”, “Pakistan Civil War”, and “Imran Khan Arrested”. A Twitter user shared this video and wrote, “Exclusive Footage from Kashmir Highway, Islamabad. Huge crowd came from KP, according to the ground reports”. The archived version of this tweet can be seen here. India Today found that this video is neither recent nor related to the ongoing protests in Pakistan. It dates back to January 2021 when clashes erupted between Honduran migrants and Guatemalan security forces. Not Pakistan A quick reverse search of the viral video’s keyframes led us to its longer version uploaded to the YouTube channel of The Telegraph on January 18, 2021. Per the video’s description, it showed migrants from Honduras clashing with the Guatemalan police. The Daily Mail and the Chinese state-run China Global Television Network also reported this incident at the time and shared the video. According to Reuters, on January 17, 2021, Guatemala’s security forces stopped around 8,000 migrants in the Guatemalan village of Vado Hondo, about 55 km from the borders of Honduras and El Salvador. These migrants, reportedly from Honduras, left their country in an attempt to escape poverty and violence. Per the report, Guatemalan security officers managed to stop the migrants from going beyond Vado Hondo. Geolocating the video We found other videos of the incident shot from different angles. We noticed that on one side of the road, there was a red wall and trees planted at equal gaps. On the other side of the road, there were hills. Towards the direction in which the security forces are standing, we noticed a white building near the road. As the crowd pushed the security forces back, we observed a green pole. We were able to find this location in the Vado Hondo village of Guatemala. All the elements listed above are visible in the Google Maps Street View of this location. A comparison between the news videos and Google Maps and Street View can be seen below Thus, it’s clear that an old video from Guatemala is being falsely shared as a recent protest in Pakistan.
