  • Fact Check: This young Palestinian girl was NOT imprisoned by Israel A video of a reunion between a mother and her child, separated after an Israeli attack, was falsely shared as that of a prisoner released by Israel. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video does not show a young prisoner but a girl who was separated from her mother during an Israeli attack in Gaza. A group of 24 women and 15 teenage boys detained by Israel were released from prisons in exchange for a group of hostages held by Hamas on November 25. The bus that transported these detainees was welcomed by a sea of jubilant Palestinian supporters. Following this, an emotional video of a reunion between a child and a mother went viral on social media. Those sharing the clip claimed that this was a Palestinian child who was imprisoned in Israel. One person shared the video on Facebook writing, “Are you serious? That little one was in jail? It’s hard to believe such a young child could face such harsh realities. Situations like these compel us to question the justice systems and their impacts on the most vulnerable,” along with hashtags such as “free Palestine”. India Today Fact Check found that this video shows the reunion of a mother and her child in a hospital after they were separated during an Israeli attack. OUR PROBE A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led us to a tweet containing an extended, black-and-white version of the viral clip. According to this tweet by Al Jazeera, this video showed a reunion between a mother and her daughter in the Nasser Hospital of Khan Yunis, a city in southern Gaza. The date stamp on the video read November 23. We then found another video of the incident shared on the Facebook page of Al Hadath, a news outlet that’s part of the international Arabic news television network Al-Arabiya TV. The caption, translated from Arabic to English, read: “A Palestinian mother eagerly hugs her daughter after she survived an Israeli raid near their home in Khan Younis.” In the video, we could first see the viral portion of the mother hugging her child. This was followed by an interview of Muhammad Zuhdi Al-Dabiki, a resident of Khan Yunis. According to the subtitles, the resident recalled the moment bomb shells exploded in his neighbourhood, where this girl was separated from her mother. She was terrified but an ambulance helped her and then she found her mother at a hospital. There are several videos of Palestinians reuniting with their families post their release by Israel. However, the young girl in the viral video is not one of those people. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
