  • Fact Check: Old pic of Gr Noida Dalit family stripping in protest FALSELY shared as Karnataka caste atrocity An old picture of the Greater Noida Dalit family stripping in protest was falsely shared as a Karnataka caste atrocity. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This photo was shot in 2015 in Dankaur in Gautam Budh Nagar, UP. It shows a Dalit family stripping in front of a police station, reportedly in protest. The family of a Dalit boy in Ullerahalli in Karnataka’s Kolar district was slapped with a Rs. 60,000 fine by the village panchayat after the boy accidentally touched the wooden pole of the village deity. They also reportedly warned that if they fail to pay the fine by October 1, the entire family will be ostracised. Following this incident, people shared a photo of a group of people, naked in public and claimed it was of the aforementioned Dalit family. Posts like these had captions like, "Feeling ashamed to know a Dalit family in Karnataka badly tortured nakedly [sic] and fined for entering a temple and touching idol. Simply curse! Are we Humans?" The Archived version of one such post can be seen here. Feeling ashamed to know a #Dalit family in #Karnataka badly tortured nakedly & fined for entering temple & touching idol. Simply curse! AFWA Probe We found several reports on the Karnataka incident involving the Dalit family. Per the Hindu, the Masti police had registered a case against the eight members of the village panchayat under various sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities Act) in connection with the case. No report, however, mentioned the family being stripped naked and humiliated in public. So, we reverse-searched the viral photo and that led us to a 2015 India Today report. Per the report, five members of a Dalit family, including three women, were arrested after they allegedly stripped in a market in Dankaur in Gautam Budh Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, to protest the police's alleged refusal to register a complaint of robbery. After a heated argument with the cops, the family reportedly exited the Greater Noida police station and stripped in protest. They alleged that the police were trying to defend the accused. Thus, it is clear that while the photo shows a Dalit family, naked in public, it has nothing to do with the recent incident in the Kolar district of Karnataka.
