Quick Take
A social media post claims that walking barefoot changes the pH of the body. We fact-checked and found the claim to be Mostly False.
The Claim
A Facebook post claims that walking barefoot changes the body’s pH, specifically that of the blood.
We have attached the screenshot of the post below:
Fact Check
What is the pH of the human body?
The pH stands for the potential of hydrogen. It measures acidity or alkalinity on a scale from 0 to 14. The body’s pH varies in different parts. The pH of the human body ranges between 7.35 to 7.45, with the average at 7.40. Dr. Manish Singhal, Senior Oncologist at Apollo Hospital, Delhi says, “The human body has a pH of around 7.4. a slight change in the pH balance of the body can make you very sick.”
Does walking barefoot change the pH of the body?
Not exactly. We could not find any credible scientific evidence that confirms walking barefoot can change the pH of the body. The theory that walking barefoot can change the pH of the body is based on the idea that the earth is negatively charged and that this can help to neutralize the positive ions in the body. However, there is also no scientific evidence to support this claim.
We ran a quick Google reverse image search on a few keyframes of the claimed video and found that the speaker is Gary Brecka. According to his personal website, he is a professional human biologist. His education includes biology degrees from Frostburg University and the National College of Chiropractic, offered by the National University of Health Sciences.
In relation to the claim, there is evidence to suggest that the body’s pH is influenced by genetics and various factors in daily life. Moreover, another research paper shows that pH of blood can change with any exercise.
Dr Reena Majithia, Consultant Dermatologist & Cosmetologist explains, “Walking barefoot does not have a direct impact on the pH (acid-base balance) of the body. The body’s pH is primarily regulated by physiological processes in the bloodstream and various organs, such as the kidneys and lungs. These processes work to maintain a stable pH level in the body, typically around 7.4, which is slightly alkaline.
While walking barefoot may have other health benefits and can be enjoyable for some people, it does not significantly affect the body’s pH level. The pH level of the skin on your feet may vary slightly, but this does not have a substantial impact on the overall pH of the body.
Maintaining a balanced pH in the body is essential for proper bodily functions, and it is primarily influenced by factors like diet, respiration, and the body’s natural buffering systems. To ensure a healthy pH balance, it’s important to maintain a well-balanced diet, stay hydrated, and engage in a healthy lifestyle overall.”
THIP Media has previously fact checked the claim of changing pH balance of the body to treat multiple diseases like Cancer and how Lemon and Sodium Bicarbonate can change the pH level of the body. In similar way, changes in the pH level of human body with the help of baking soda used for hair growth has also been debunked.
