  • Fact Check: Old video of Kohli's post-match presser FALSELY shared as retirement announcement After India lost to England in the T20 World Cup, many on social media shared a video of a press conference claiming Virat Kohli has announced his retirement from cricket. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The video is not related to T20 World Cup 2022. It is a post-match press conference from the Asia Cup 2022 held in September. India’s defeat against England in the T20 World Cup 2022's second semi-final on November 10 has stung fans across the country. Both online and offline, fans and experts lambasted the Indian squad for its poor performance that brought India's World Cup campaign to a startling halt. Amid this, many on social media shared a video of a press conference and claimed that after losing to England in semi-finals, Virat Kohli announced his retirement from cricket. Many shared the video the video with Hindi captions like, "Virat Kohli announces retirement from cricket after semi-final loss." AFWA's investigation, however, found this misleading. The video has no link with ICC T20 World Cup 2022 — it was a post-match press conference held during the Asia Cup 2022. AFWA PROBE Upon reverse-searching a keyframe of the video, we found the same clip on ESPNcricinfo uploaded on September 4, 2022. The same video was shared by Gulf News on its YouTube, titled "Asia Cup 2022: Virat Kohli post-match press conference". During the conference, Kohli said he did not think about answering his critics when he returned to competitive action at Asia Cup 2022, saying he was focused on working hard and giving his “120 per cent” towards the team’s cause. He said he was absolutely fine with people having opinions about his game but that doesn’t, in any way, affect his happiness. Kohli said, “Never really paid attention to these things (answering the critics). I have played for 14 years and it doesn’t happen by chance. My job is to work hard on my game, something that I am keen to do, keen to improve for my team and that’s something that I am going to continue to do so.” After Team India's poor performance in T20 World Cup 2022, there is speculation that many senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami may say goodbye to the shortest form of the game. However, India's head coach Rahul Dravid said, "It's too early to talk about it, just after a semi-final game... These guys have been terrific performers for us. We've got a couple of years to reflect on it. These are some really quality players here. Not the right time to talk about or think about this stuff now. We'll have enough time, enough matches as we go on ahead and try to prepare for the next World Cup." Therefore, it is clear that the video being shared is not related to the T20 World Cup 2022. It is a post-match press conference from the Asia Cup 2022. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
