India Today Fact Check
This incident took place in Manipur in January 2022. It has nothing to do with the Karnataka Assembly polls.
In the aftermath of the Congress party securing a decisive victory in the Karnataka elections, a virulent campaign to demonise minority communities in the state has come to the fore. Two grisly photos of a slaughtered cow lying on a Bharatiya Janata Party have gone viral on social media.
Those sharing the photos linked them to Karnataka, alleging that Muslim supporters celebrated the Congress victory by slaughtering a cow on a BJP flag. A Twitter user while sharing the viral photos wrote: “Barbarians. I got a video saying it’s from Karnataka and Izlamic fanatics cut the cow on the BJP flag to celebrate Khangres's victory. Twitter isn’t allowing me to upload the video so posting the pics.” The archived version of the tweet can be seen here.
India Today’s investigation found that the viral photos are from Manipur and are more than a year old.
OUR PROBE
We noticed that in response to the viral post, one person said that the pictures were from a 2022 incident in Manipur. Subsequently, we searched on Twitter for more details about the incident.
We came across a tweet from January 31, 2022, by a person called Nishant Azad who works for the Organiser, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s mouthpiece. It contained a video whose screenshots are now viral. The clip showed a few men examining the carcass of a cow in a field. Blood that had leaked from its slit throat could be seen splattered on a BJP flag on the ground.
The tweet read: “Manipur: Muzlims slaughtered a cow keeping on BJP flag. The goons also abused Chief Minister N Biren Singh and BJP Manipur president A Sarda Devi.”
On February 1, 2022, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh responded to the tweet with the screenshot of an Imphal Free Press news report, which said that three people allegedly involved in the case had been arrested.
We found the news report in question, which stated that in Lilong, a cow was slaughtered on a BJP flag “as a mark of protest against the announcement of the BJP tickets for the Manipur Assembly polls” that year. It added that Nazbul Hussain, Abdur Rashid, and Md Arif Khan were booked under the Prevention of Cruelty To Animal Act 1960, and for allegedly inciting enmity among different groups.
We found news reports about this incident from other media outlets like The Hindu and The Nagaland Post and The Times of India.
Thus, it's clear that this incident has nothing to do with the Congress victory in the 2023 Karnataka Assembly polls.
