Australia’s victory against India in the ICC World Cup final broke the hearts of millions of Indians. But, are fans disappointed to such an extent that they are expressing their anger by bashing the posters of Indian players? This is what is being claimed by many who shared a video of people sloganeering against Team India and hitting a TV set with posters of players on it.
An X user shared the video and wrote, “Indians celebrating Australia's World Cup win,” along with hashtags related to the India-Australia final. The video has been shared by many on X and Facebook with the same caption. Pakistani news outlet “Bol News” also shared the same on its YouTube channel. An archived version of the viral post can be seen here.
India Today found that the video is more than one year old and has nothing to do with India’s recent defeat in the World Cup final.
Our probe
With the help of the InVid tool, we found that the video was shared by some Facebook users in November 2022. A page named “Babar Azam Fan Club” posted the video on November 12, 2022. Another Facebook user shared it on November 11, 2022. However, none of these users mentioned the location of the video.
India lost to England by 10 wickets in the semi-final of T20 world cup on November 10, 2022. Most likely, the backlash seen in the video is the fallout from this match.
We couldn’t independently verify the location of the video, but it is clear that it is not related to the World Cup final because it is at least one year old.
It’s noteworthy that as per a Dainik Bhaskar report, angry Indian fans broke a TV set in UP’s Lakhimpur Kheri after India lost to Australia in World Cup final.
