  • FACT CHECK: Did Grindr Threaten To Reveal Republican Politicians Who Use The App? A post shared on Facebook claims the LGBTQ+ dating app Grindr will be revealing the identities of Florida Republican politicians and party officials who secretly use the app. Verdict: False The post originates as satire. A Grindr spokesperson told Check Your Fact in an email that there is no truth to the claim. Fact Check: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is moving to expand the “Don’t Say Gay” bill to grades 4 to 12 in schools, forbidding discussion of gender identity or sexual orientation, according to AP News. Disney World in Orlando is holding an LGBTQ+ conference in response to DeSantis’ anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, the Guardian reports. A Facebook post claims that Grindr will be revealing Republican politicians who use the app. The post shares a Gif of Homer Simpson saying his catchphrase, “D’OH.” “The gay dating app Grindr says if Florida doesn’t stop passing homophobic and transphobic laws, they’ll reveal every Republican legislator and party official who secretly uses the app,” the post reads. The claim is fabricated, however. It originates from a Twitter account called The Halfway Post, which identifies itself as satire. “Halfway true comedy and satire by @DashMacIntyre. I don’t report the facts, I improve them,” the account’s bio reads. (RELATED: Did U.S. Threaten Uganda For Their Stance On Homosexuality?) BREAKING: The gay dating app Grindr says if Florida doesn’t stop passing homophobic and transphobic laws, they’ll reveal every Republican legislator and party official who secretly uses the app. — The Halfway Post (@HalfwayPost) March 22, 2023 “This claim is false. Grindr protects the privacy of all its users. Anti-LGBTQ legislation is abominable and cruel, and we vehemently condemn any laws that restrict, deny, or abolish the rights of LGBTQ people,” a Grinder spokesperson told Check Your Fact in an email. This is not the first time misinformation has spread online. Check Your Fact recently debunked a claim a video showed an Australian doctor having a stroke during surgery.
