  • Fact Check: PM Modi is NOT glancing at Rihanna in this photo, the pop star wasn't there at all This digitally altered image went viral during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first state visit to the US. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check Two different images from separate events were photoshopped to create this. PM Modi and Rihanna have never shared a stage. Amid Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the United States, a photo of him and pop star Rihanna began making rounds on social media. In the photo, PM Modi appeared to be inappropriately staring at the Barbadian singer, actress, and businesswoman. The archived version of such a post can be seen here. India Today found that Rihanna was photoshopped into the picture. Our Probe Had PM Modi shared a stage with an international celebrity like Rihanna, it would definitely have made the news. However, the absence of such news reports cast doubts on the authenticity of the photo. When we cropped Rihanna's photo and examined it using Google Lens, it led us to a UK Mirror report from March 1, 2017. It featured a similar picture of Rihanna. Per the report, it was shot at Harvard University in the US when the singer received the Humanitarian of the Year Award for her charity work involving young Caribbean children. A comparison between both images makes it clear that the background and surroundings of Rihana's image were altered digitally. The original image was shot by Paul Marotta for Getty Images. Next, we cropped the image of PM Modi and reverse-searched it. This led us to a report published in Pro Kerala on April 19, 2019. In the photos in the report, PM Modi could be seen wearing a similar outfit and sitting on a chair alongside Union Minister Vijay Goel at a convention of traders in Delhi's Talkatora Stadium. When we compared the chair, its cover, and the attire of PM Modi, it became clear that both images were shot during the same event. Photojournalist Raj K Raj from the Hindustan Times clicked this image. Although we did not find the original image used in the viral posts, it is more than evident that the image in question was digitally altered.
