State Bank of India is a state-owned commercial bank and financial services company, nationalized by the Indian government in 1955. SBI maintains thousands of branches throughout India and around the world. SBI is the oldest commercial bank in India as it was started in 1806 as Bank of Calcutta. Later, it was renamed as Bank of Bengal. Along with the Bank of Bombay and Bank of Madras, it was one of the presidency banks, these banks were owned by the provincial government and private subscribers. In 1921, the presidency banks were merged to form the Imperial Bank of India. In 1955, the government of India and the country’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of India assumed joint ownership of IBI, later renamed as the State Bank of India.
The logo of the State Bank of India was also introduced in 1955 when a golden coin was released. The coin had an ornate and detailed image of a tree in the middle with 1955 marked on it. In 1970, the SBI logo was completely redesigned, this was later changed in 2017, and this logo is being used to date to represent the bank.
Recently, a comparison image of a satellite image of a lake with the SBI bank logo is in circulation with the claim that the SBI logo has been inspired by the aerial view of Kankaria lake in Ahmedabad.
Here is the archive link of the Claim.
Fact Check:
The claim is False. The design of the SBI logo represents a keyhole, it has nothing to do with the Kankaria Lake in Ahmedabad
When searched for the details of the SBI design, we found that the logo designed in 1971, called the Seal of Trust, designed by designer Mr Shekhar Kamat at the National Institute of Design. When we searched for more information about Shekhar Kamat and the SBI design, we found a few social media posts published on this topic.
An Instagram page named Indian Design Archive shared a post stating that “State Bank of India” logo.
Designed by: Shekhar Kamat, 1971. Instagram: @sheknroll. "I designed this logo around 1970 at NID. State Bank of India was then and even now the largest bank in India, hence it had many branches in rural India. My thought was to design a simple logo. In those days bank counters had round tokens with holes. So the idea was to shape a logo as simple as the token. The round blue shape was to signify strength, protecting your wealth. Also, the simplicity of the circle could help even a one-man bank manager in a remote part of India to put a sign drawn by any painter on a mud wall. All you required was a nail, tread (what is this?), and circle that could be easily drawn. The color blue was selected to match the Indian sunny blue sky. Of course, I didn’t write this (my inner idea) at the time of the presentation of this design. Certainly, inspiration didn’t come from Kankaria Lake. Sorry to disappoint those who thought it did. But it seems like it has lasted 45 years and I think it looks pretty up to date. Simplicity has its own charm!" - Shekhar Kamat”
Another Facebook post published by Scroll in September 2017 shares the interview of Shekar Kamat, who clarifies that there is no relationship between the aerial view of the Kankaria Lake and the SBI logo.
According to a report published in Aaj Tak, Shekhar Kamat said that it is a symbol of security and also he rejected the claim that the logo is related to the Kankaria Lake in Ahmedabad. Shekhar also said that when he was working on the logo, he did not even go to Kankaria Lake. He added that this logo was made by looking at the shape of the token.
Therefore, the claim that the SBI logo was inspired by the aerial image of Kankaria Lake in Ahmedabad is False.
