  • In late November 2024, a meme spread on social media, claiming Elon Musk once said, "Imma focus on making life harder for trans people." (Threads user @unitedhumanists) The full text on the image read: "Imagine you get to a point of wealth so surreal that you can literally solve world hunger. You can eliminate hunger at a planetary scale. And instead, you say, 'nah, Imma focus on making life harder for trans people.'" However, the quoted material was incorrectly attributed to Musk, who neither said nor wrote it, and therefore we have rated this claim as misattributed. The image was spread on social media platforms such as X, Facebook, Reddit, Threads, YouTube and iFunny. The origin of the image remains unclear, as Google reverse image search results did not definitively indicate a social media account that initially posted it. "Imagine being so rich you could solve over half the worlds problems and deciding you want to take earth's problems to another planet instead," one Facebook user commented, while another stated, "He disgusts me. A revolting individual." "Musk bought Twitter in large part to spite his trans daughter, because she was talking shit about him there. The guy is a butthurt little boy," one Reddit user wrote. There is no credible evidence to support the claim that Elon Musk made the quoted statement, as thorough searches of reputable sources and a comprehensive Google search yielded no results verifying this attribution. If Musk had made such a provocative statement, it would likely have been widely reported by major media outlets and discussed extensively, given his high public profile and the controversy surrounding his remarks on sensitive topics. The absence of such coverage strongly indicates the quote was fabricated for purposes of drawing attention to Musk's controversial opinions about transgender issues. The controversy surrounding Musk and transgender issues stems from his public statements and actions regarding transgender rights, particularly in relation to his estranged daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson, who is transgender. For instance, he once said she was "dead — killed by the woke mind virus." Moreover, according to The Guardian, in 2022, Musk "spent more than $50m to fund anti-immigrant and anti-transgender advertisements by a group called Citizens for Sanity." We have previously investigated other claims about Musk, including a rumor that Musk had video evidence showing Hollywood celebrities' involvement with Sean "Diddy" Combs. We have also fact-checked a photograph allegedly showing a photo of Musk and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos seated together.
