Quick Take
Several social media users have shared a post on depression claiming the quote is given by the actor Jim Carrey. We fact-checked and found the claim to be False.
The Claim
A social media post reads, “I believe depression is legitimate. But I also believe that if you don’t; exercise, eat nutritious food, get sunlight, get enough sleep, consume positive material, surround yourself with support, then you aren’t giving yourself a fighting chance” along with the image of actor Jim Carrey.

Fact Check
Did Jim Carrey recently make a statement on depression?
No evidence confirms the quote is by actor Jim Carrey. We could not find the quote in any of his tweets, and the actor does not maintain handles on any other social media platform. Though Jim Carrey did talk about depression in a 2010 video discussion but that has no relation with the quote that is doing rounds on social media.
As discussions around mental health gain traction, it’s crucial to verify claims, like those made by public figures. For more insight into mental health misconceptions, check out our article on whether a medical degree is necessary to understand our own health.
On Google reverse image search, we found the same quote with someone else’s name. Marleah Leslie, Carrey’s publicist, has confirmed that the quote is not given by the actor Jim Carrey. Hence, the claim remains false until proven otherwise.
