  • Last Updated on February 13, 2025 by Dr Priyamvada Quick Take A social media post claims that beetroot juice can cleanse toxins, prevent acne, and purify blood. We did the fact check and termed this claim as mostly false. The Claim According to an Instagram post, “drinking beetroot juice regularly helps cleanse toxins from the body, prevents acne and pimples, and purifies the blood, leading to glowing skin.” Fact Check Can beetroot juice cleanse toxins from the body? No, beetroot juice does not ‘cleanse toxins’ from the body. The liver and kidneys are responsible for detoxifying the body, and there is no scientific proof that drinking beetroot juice enhances this process. While beetroots contain antioxidants and support liver function, they do not directly remove toxins. For expert guidance we spoke with Syed Saqib Bukhari, MPhil in Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Lecturer at Government College University Faisalabad, Pakistan. He says, “Diet plays a crucial role in maintaining liver health, as the liver naturally detoxifies the body. A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients supports liver function, reduces toxin buildup, and promotes overall well-being. While beetroot juice contains beneficial compounds, it does not cleanse toxins from the body on its own.” Similarly, another post suggests that drinking a mixture of beetroot, carrot, lemon, mint, and ginger for three days can support liver detoxification and help reduce fatty liver. However, this lacks strong scientific evidence. Does beetroot juice prevent acne and pimples? Not really. Acne is caused by multiple factors, including hormones, bacteria, and oil production. Beetroot juice contains vitamins and antioxidants that support skin health, but there is no direct evidence that it prevents acne or pimples. Drinking it may help overall skin hydration, but it is not a cure for breakouts. How can we achieve glowing, acne-free skin? A healthy diet, proper skincare, and hydration help improve skin health. Eating antioxidant-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and nuts supports skin repair. Regular cleansing, using non-comedogenic products, and staying hydrated can help prevent acne. Drinking beetroot juice can contribute to hydration, but it alone won’t guarantee clear skin. Managing stress and getting enough sleep also play a key role. No single food or drink can ensure glowing, acne-free skin. For expert guidance, we reached out to “Dr Ekansh Shekhar, Dermatologist, Cosmetologist, Trichologist, and Aesthetic Medicine Consultant based in Lucknow. He explains, “Healthy, glowing skin isn’t just about one food or drink—it’s a mix of good skincare, a balanced diet, and proper hydration. Eating antioxidant-rich foods, drinking plenty of water, and using gentle skincare products help keep the skin clear. Beetroot juice can support hydration and provide beneficial nutrients, but it won’t prevent acne on its own. Since acne is influenced by hormones, stress, and clogged pores, maintaining a consistent skincare routine, managing stress, and getting enough sleep are just as important for clear skin.” Can beetroot juice purify the blood? No, the idea of ‘blood purification’ is misleading. The liver and kidneys naturally filter and cleanse the blood, keeping it free from toxins. While beetroot juice contains nitrates that support blood flow and may help lower blood pressure, it does not have any special blood-cleansing properties. Research suggests that certain foods may support the body’s detox processes, but the science is still evolving. A 2015 study found that nutrients can influence detox pathways, but their effects vary based on dose, genetics, and other factors. While a whole-food diet may contribute to overall health, detox plans should be carefully designed by experts. More research is needed to fully understand how food impacts detoxification. Related to this, another common belief is that turmeric can purify blood, but this is equally false. THIP Media Take The claim that beetroot juice can cleanse toxins, prevent acne, and purify blood is mostly false. Beetroot juice is a nutritious drink rich in antioxidants and nitrates, but it does not cleanse toxins, prevent acne, or purify blood. The body has its own detoxification system, and there is no scientific proof that beetroot juice enhances it. While beetroot juice has health benefits, exaggerated claims can be misleading.
