  • Fact Check: Video of bulldozer flood rescue is NOT from Libya but from China India Today found that the video shows a bulldozer rescuing a family stuck in a flood caused by Typhoon Doksuri in China's Beijing. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video dates back to August 2023 and shows people stuck in floods in Beijing, China. The calamitous Storm Daniel that caused massive floods in Libya has led to the deaths of over 11,000 people. And the death toll is expected to rise with at least 10,000 remaining missing in the days after. Of the videos purporting to show the horrid situation in the country being shared on social media, one was of a bulldozer rescuing people in a heavily flooded area. A Twitter user shared the video and wrote, “Libya: Successful rescue operation... Libya flooding disaster.” The archived version of this post can be seen here. India Today found that this video is neither recent nor does it have anything to do with the floods in Libya. It’s from China. OUR PROBE We noticed that some people responded to the viral tweets and said that the video was from China. A subsequent search with relevant keywords led us to the Chinese news outlet People’s Daily China sharing a similar video on Twitter on August 1, 2023. Per the outlet, the video showed a Chinese man using a bulldozer to rescue a family stuck during a flood in Beijing. We compared both videos and concluded that they showed the same incident. A comparison is given below. CNN at the time also reported that a family trapped in flood waters in Beijing was rescued by a man who approached them with a bulldozer. This flood reportedly was caused by Typhoon Doksuri. Several other news outlets like CGTN and Express Tribune too reported this incident at the time. Thus, it became clear that this video had nothing to do with floods in Libya. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
