India Today Fact Check
Although the temperature in Churu recently touched -2.5 degrees Celsius, this video is at least four years old.
According to the India Meteorological Department, many parts of Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi will experience cold waves and severe cold wave conditions till January 18 at least. Reportedly, frost conditions are also very likely in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and West Uttar Pradesh on January 18 and 19.
With weather conditions like these, many on social media did not have a hard time believing a video that’s been widely shared. People claimed that in Churu Rajasthan, a farmer caught on video cylinders of ice instead of water pouring out of an irrigation pipe.
This bizarre video seems to have been shot in an arid region with nothing but dirt visible all around.
Others shared the same video claiming that the temperature in Rajasthan reached negative five degrees Celsius in the winter. The archived version of such a post can be seen here.
AFWA's investigation found that this video is not recent at all.

As we started looking for the origin of the video with the help of a reverse image search, we noticed a similar screenshot featured in a news report published on December 31, 2018.
The report claimed this phenomenon was observed in the Mainpat village of Chhattisgarh, making it clear that the video was not recent at all. We also came across the same clip posted to YouTube on December 31, 2018, claiming it was from Mainpat.
On January 04, 2019, the British outlet Daily Mail published a story claiming this scene was from somewhere in northern India but later deleted the report. Here is an archived version of the article.
Where is this video from?
We tried searching for the video using Urdu keywords, and subsequently found a tweet from the official handle of SAMAA TV, a Pakistani news organisation.
The Urdu caption of this tweet from January 1, 2019, mentioned that the video was shot in the Khuzdar area of the Balochistan province of Pakistan, and the video soon went viral.
A song could be heard in the background of the viral video. We searched for the original song with the help of Shazam and found that it was "Ghorooba", sung by an Iranian artist named Pouya Bayati in Persian. According to the Pennsylvania State University's language centre, there are more than a million Dari Persian speakers in Pakistan.
A January 16 news report stated that temperatures had indeed dipped down to -2.5 degrees in Churu, Rajasthan, recently. Thus, for water in irrigation pipes to freeze in Churu recently is not outside the realm of possibilities. So, while we could not pinpoint the exact location of the video, it is more than certain that the video is at least four years old.
