  • Fact Check: Half-human-half-pig hybrid doesn't exist, it's a silicone sculpture Recently, photos of a 'pig-human baby' have gone viral on social media. The viral post claims that a pig that looks like a human being was born. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check It is not a living creature but a model made of rubber and silicon by a famous Italian artist Laira Maganuco. In Greek mythology, a “Chimera” is a monstrous fire-breathing hybrid creature, composed of different animal parts. It is usually depicted as a lion, with the head of a goat protruding from its back, and a tail that might end with a snake's head. However, in science, the term “Chimera” means an organism that contains cells from two different species. For years, Chimeras or hybrid animals have featured in fantasy novels and sci-fi films. Now, if we say that a pig has given birth to a human-like creature, would you believe it? Recently, photos of a ‘pig-human baby’ have gone viral on social media and garnered around 33,000 likes and 600 shares. The viral post claims that a pig that looks like a human being was born. The caption to these photos reads, "Inexplicably, a creature that was half human and half pig was born, and its presence sent the villagers fleeing in terror." The photos created a buzz on the internet in 2018-2019 as well when social media posts claiming that a pig delivered offspring resembling a human baby went viral. AFWA found that these photos are a work of art by Italian sculptor Laira Maganuco, and not a living creature. AFWA PROBE A simple Google reverse image search led us to the actual source. The pictures were first posted by an Italian artist Laira Maganuco on her website. According to the website, Maganuco specialises in creating hyper-realistic sculptures. This image of a "hybrid baby-pig", too, is one of the products of her many artworks. The description provided with this image reads, "This piece is entirely hand sculpted and made of platinum silicone...Contains elements of great detail, to make the piece of art look even more realistic." This "hybrid baby-pig" is one of the examples of human-made art that is still available for sale on Maganuco’s website. The product description can be seen below: We then searched for Maganuco's social media accounts. We found images of similar sculptures of mysterious-looking creatures on her Facebook and Instagram accounts, where she promotes her artwork. The sculpture is also available for sale on the creative goods retail site Etsy. To sum it up, a hyper-realistic silicone sculpture of half-human and half-pig is shared with a misleading claim that it's a living creature.
