The headline of the said article reads, `Black fungus: Indian scientist find link with cow urine, 9,000 cases of rare infection’. Our fact check finds that the screenshot image is altered and the claim is False. The Claim The screenshot shows a news report from BBC website headlined, `Black fungus: Indian scientist find link with cow urine, 9,000 cases of rare infection’. The news report further reads, ‘Scientists in India have discovered a link of the Black Fungus infection with cow urine. Doctors say that there is a link with steroids used to treat Covid and reaction to cow urine…..’ Archived versions of the post can be seen here and here and a snapshot is given below. Fact Check Did BBC publish this news? No. The image is altered and fake. The screenshot does not show a date on which the news report was published. But, it showed the reporter name as ‘Soutik Biswas’. A simple search on the BBC website as well as on Google shows that the only article written by the author regarding Black Fungus was titled, ‘Black Fungus: India reports nearly 9,000 cases of rare infection‘. Furthermore, on a Twitter chat Biswas clarified that the screenshot doing rounds is fake. The tweet is embedded below:
