  • Fact Check: This is not the 'first ever snowfall' in Haryana village, it's a 2020 hailstorm video An old video showing the aftermath of a hailstorm in Haryana is being falsely shared as a recent video of snowfall there. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is more than two years old. And instead of snowfall, this video shows the aftermath of a hailstorm there. North Indians have been battling bone-chilling cold weather since the beginning of the new year. Reportedly, January 2023 could go down in the books as the coldest for the region, and a weather expert has predicted that temperatures may even be as low as -4 degrees Celsius between January 14 and 19. Amid this, a video of a car driving on what looks like a snow-covered road has gone viral. Those sharing the video claimed it was from the Barwala village of Haryana, as evidenced by a green signboard with “Barwala” written in English and Hindi in the video. A Twitter user shared the video and wrote, “Neither #HIMACHAL nor #KASHMIR. First time in History Snowfall is seen in BARWALA village of #Haryana”. The archived version of this post can be seen here. AFWA found that the viral video is neither recent nor does it show snow. AFWA PROBE We noticed that many people responded to the viral tweets, saying that the video showed the aftermath of hailstorms and not snowfall. We also noticed that the video contained the watermark “Fb.com/hrroadwaysfans”. Subsequently, we looked for the Facebook page @hrroadwaysfans, and found that it had shared the same video on December 27, 2022. Using keyword search, we found a longer and much older version of the viral video. A YouTube channel shared it on March 14, 2020, with the title: “Barwala by pass # hailstorm #full rain fall barwala news”. In the longer version of the video, a building with “JD Jindal Hospital” written on it could be seen. We looked for “JD Jindal Hospital” on Google maps and found a hospital with the same name in Hisar, Haryana. Hisar is less than 40 km away from Barwala village. On comparing photos of the hospital on Google Maps with the screenshots of the viral video, one can easily conclude it's the same building. Using Google Street View, we were able to geolocate the place seen in the viral video. AFWA spoke to Dr Surender Kumar, the owner of JD Jindal Hospital, who told us that he had never heard about snowfall in the area and that the viral video could probably have been related to a hailstorm. India Today’s Hisar correspondent Praveen Kumar also said that to the best of his knowledge, Hisar had never witnessed snowfall, adding that the viral video could have been from a hailstorm. This year, so far, there have been no hailstorms in the area. Thus, it’s clear that an old video showing the aftermath of a hailstorm in Haryana is being falsely shared as a recent video of snowfall there.
