  • A video showing Jyoti, a PhD scholar from New Delhiā€™s Jamia Millia Islamia University is going viral on social media to claim that she's 42. The claim also states that she was recently suspended. In the video, she questions the Jamia administration and asks who gave the university permission to share their personal details with the police. Rishi Bagree, who has been called out for sharing misinformation before, also shared this claim. (Archives of similar claims can be seen here and here.) What's the truth?: We reached out to Jyoti who confirmed to us that this claim is false. She was born in 1997, and her age is 27, not 42, as claimed. How did we find out the truth?: We performed a reverse image search on some of the keyframes of the viral video which led us to a YouTube video shared by the channel Nayab World Official. This was shared on 17 February, and it showed the same woman; the viral segment can be seen from the 4:45 timestamp. The title and description of the video stated that it shows a press conference held by suspended students of Jamia. The Quint also published a report on the protest, which carried quotes from Jyoti, who was identified as a PhD scholar at Jamia Millia Islamia. It also stated that she is one of the students who the university had handed a suspension letter. We then contacted Jyoti, who confirmed to us that this viral claim was false. She further clarified that she is born on 21 April 1997 and is 27 years old. She also shared a photo of her Aadhar card with us to confirm the date but requested us to not share it in the story. What happened at Jamia?: The Jamia administration denied students permission to hold demonstrations linked to the fifth anniversary of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests in December 2024. However, the students still reportedly gathered to protest. Following this, the university issued show-cause notices to four students namely, Saurabh Tripathi, Jyoti, Fuzail Shabbar, and Niranjan KS. The administration later reportedly suspended two PhD scholars, including Jyoti. Conclusion: A false claim stating that Jyoti, PhD scholar from Jamia Millia Islamia University, is 42 years old is going viral online.
